Allergisk konjunktivit: symtom, orsaker och behandling
Allergic conjunctivitis: why we are seeing many more cases this year
This spring, we are seeing a significant increase in patients with ocular allergy symptoms. Weather conditions have led to higher concentrations of pollen and airborne allergens.
The eye is one of the most exposed surfaces of the human body and reacts quickly to these particles.
What is allergic conjunctivitis?
It occurs when the immune system reacts excessively to substances such as pollen, dust mites, or dust.
Most common symptoms
Intense eye itching
Red eyes
Tearing
Foreign body sensation
Eyelid swelling
Light sensitivity
Watery or mucous discharge
Itching is usually the predominant symptom and a strong indicator of allergic origin.
Why rubbing the eyes is not advisable
Rubbing increases inflammation and can damage the ocular surface.
Treatment
- Avoid pollen exposure
- Wear sunglasses outdoors
- Cold artificial tears
- Topical antihistamines
- Mast cell stabilizing drops
My personal recommendation
Artificial tears act as a protective barrier, helping to eliminate allergens from the ocular surface.
