Dry eye after cataract surgery: causes, symptoms and duration
Dry eye after cataract surgery: why it happens and how long it lasts
Cataract surgery is a very safe procedure, but during the postoperative period some patients may experience dryness, irritation or fluctuating vision.
This is not a complication, but a temporary response of the eye. Patients with dry eye syndrome may notice these symptoms more clearly.
What causes it?
- Reduced corneal sensitivity
- Altered tear reflex
- Unstable tear film
Common symptoms
Foreign body sensation
Mild burning or irritation
Fluctuating vision during the day
Increased need for artificial tears
How long does it last?
- Begins in the first days after surgery
- More noticeable during the first 2–4 weeks
- Improves progressively
Practical insight (my experience)
This transient dry eye can be more noticeable in patients with trifocal lenses.
