Glaucoma: the silent disease — how to catch it early
Glaucoma: the silent disease that can damage vision without warning
Glaucoma can progress for years without symptoms. Many people feel fine and see well, yet the optic nerve may be suffering progressive damage — hence the term “the silent disease.”
Why glaucoma often goes unnoticed
Visual loss usually begins in the peripheral field. Central vision remains preserved for a long time and the brain compensates, so by the time symptoms are obvious, disease may be advanced.
Who should be checked?
From a certain age, even without symptoms, regular eye exams with intraocular pressure measurement are advisable. Family history increases risk and warrants closer monitoring.
Why measure eye pressure even if you came for another reason?
In daily practice, we often detect glaucoma incidentally by measuring IOP in patients seen for other reasons.
Early diagnosis changes the prognosis
Glaucomatous damage cannot be reversed once it occurs. Detecting it early allows us to slow progression and preserve vision.
