Orthopedics

An orthopaedic traumatologist is specialized in the treatment of musculoskeletal problems

For elderly people, degeneration is the most common reason for pain in joints and related tissues. Injuries such as joint distorsions and dislocations are frequently seen. However, it can sometimes be difficult to determine whether pain is due to an accident or whether it is due to underlying aging-related degeneration of the tissues.

Orthopedic appointment

Knee pain is one of the most common reasons for scheduling an orthopedic appointment. A thorough clinical examination and patient history are the essential elements of determining the source of a patient’s symptoms. X-rays are often needed. Sometimes further radiologic examinations are required as well. In order to make judicious use of one’s time and wallet, it is advisable to consult an orthopedist about the clinical value of examinations such as MRIs.

Orthopedic treatments

The vast majority of symptoms will disappear on their own, with or without anti-inflammatory drugs, within a few weeks. In the case of prolonged or intolerable pain, the reservation of an orthopedic appointment is recommended. Anti-inflammatory drugs and physiotherapy are usually sufficient treatment. Some patients can benefit from injections such as corticosteroids. Nowadays, there are effective hyaluronate injections for patients suffering from arthrosis. Surgical treatment can only be considered if there is no response to the above treatments.

Surgery is the final option if conservative treatment is not effective. Sometimes shoulder pain, for example, does not respond to medication or physiotherapy and the surgical approach is justified. Nowadays, arthroscopic surgery is the golden standard in the treatment of joint injuries and some degenerative diseases of the joints
