Glaucoma can progress for years without symptoms. Many people feel fine and see well, yet the optic nerve may be suffering progressive damage \u2014 hence the term \u201cthe silent disease.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

Why glaucoma often goes unnoticed<\/h3>\n

Visual loss usually begins in the peripheral field<\/strong>. Central vision remains preserved for a long time and the brain compensates, so by the time symptoms are obvious, disease may be advanced.<\/p>\n

From a certain age, even without symptoms, regular eye exams with intraocular pressure<\/strong> measurement are advisable. Family history<\/strong> increases risk and warrants closer monitoring.<\/p>\n

Why measure eye pressure even if you came for another reason?<\/h3>\n

In daily practice, we often detect glaucoma incidentally<\/strong> by measuring IOP in patients seen for other reasons.<\/p>\n

Early diagnosis changes the prognosis<\/h3>\n

Glaucomatous damage cannot be reversed<\/strong> once it occurs. Detecting it early allows us to slow progression and preserve vision.<\/p>\n
