Laser Eye surgery

Eye laser surgery began in 1997 and since then there has been made around the world tens of millions of cases. First, the operations were made to the surface of the eye (PRK), later using the method LASIK(under a fläp)  that is currently the world's most common operation. The flap can be made  also with the laser (femto), or lasering can also be performed inside the cornea (SMILE).

The most common cause of laser eye surgery is myopia, that is one does not see far without glasses. Also, astigmatism can be treated, as well as a small hyperopic errors. With presbyopia laser treatment is not as good as for younger patients, but for people with the need of reading glasses a lens surgery  with multifocal lenses is the best option.

The increase of myopia must be stopped, that is to stay for a year or two so that the result of the surgery is permanent. Be sure to visit the same clinic for check ups so that the result is repeatable and reliable. The pre-examination for treatment includes measuring the refractive error and the parameters of cornea and the health status of eyes to determine eligibility for the treatment.

You should choose an experienced and trustworthy doctor. There are lots of great options, doctors do not compete so much with each others but in favor of surgery compared to using eye glasses and contact lenses.

If you want the freedom to live and to get rid of eyeglasses and contact lenses, you may want to make an appointment to the clinic for a pre-examination. If  there are no contraindications for surgery, you can book an appointment for the procedure. Before the preliminary examination is good to be without contact lenses at least 4 days, so the corneal measurements are reliable. During pregnancy, laser surgery is not done,  after giving birth is good to wait for about 6 months.

The surgery itself does not require any preparation, you just arrive at appointed time to the clinic. Aftercare instructions should to read in advance, but these will be explaned by  the nurse throughfuly before or after the surgery. If you want a  relaxing prodrug, it is worth to take about half an hour before the procedure,  anyway it is in an  easy experience. Eye drops that anesthetize irritate for about 30 seconds.  On the ocular surface is made a 120um thick flap, during this time you will experience some slight pressure sensation. This phase lasts approximately for 10 seconds. You can see the lights above the eye, the flap is turned aside and refractive error lasered for about 5-20 seconds and  it is painless. After the laser treatment the flap is turned into position and adjusted correctly and allowed to attach. The other eye is  treated in the same manner. Following the treatment the eyesight is a little foggy, but you see already see better than before the surgery without glasses.  You will stay at the clinic for about 30 minutes after  surgery, after which the doctor will check your eyes. The first control visit is the about one month after the surgery.

Post treatment regimen consists of using the cortisone and antibiotic drops  for two weeks, and the use of lubricating drops for a few months.

You will experience some dryness of the eyes for the first few weeks or months. Night time vision may be temporarily impaired, as well as light reflections may occur. However, the symptoms disappear over time. Laser surgery risks are mainly inflammation (which is very rare) or some epithelial problems that are treated  with contact lenses and eye drops. Flap problems are also very rare and do not affect the result with proper treatments.

It can be said that the results of the laser surgery are better and the problems rarer than ever, so the selection to be treated is worthwhile. Your life  will be easier, you will  be freed of the use of both eye and contact lens.

Dry Eye: Cause & Symptoms

Dry eye is a condition where for several reasons, the eye has insufficient tears to lubricate and nourish the front of the eye.  Tears are essential for maintaining the health of the front surface of the eye and for providing clear vision.  People with dry eyes either do not produce enough tears or have poor quality of tears.  Dry eye is a common and often chronic problem that increases with age.
